TTC union member responds to strike

This will be for myself a defining moment that will haunt me long after most Torontonians will have hopefully forgiven our membership for the decision to withdraw our services in the dead of night.

As a proud unionist of Local 113 for the TTC, I am left defenceless to rationalize what led to the abandonment of our patrons at midnight, however, we as a brotherhood took a stand against a contract that could have easily become misconstrued at a later date and led to job cuts in many areas of our maintenance workers.

Indeed, we stand true to each other as union brothers and sisters and had only one way to convey our message to our executive branch in the only lawful and democratic way, through our rejection of this contract.

However, not one of us was really prepared for what took place at midnight, April 25. And therein lays the crux; we recognize where we have been let down by a contract that should have never left the negotiation room, as well as the moral dilemma of what took place because of this.

I was one of the many of parents that felt the anxiety of having to bring my own children home without transit and pray that a situation such as this will never happen again.
