Seven people were hurt in a two-vehicle crash Friday at Steeles Avenue and Firebrace Road, east of Pharmacy Avenue.

Police said a Honda Civic and a Honda Odyssey minivan collided in the intersection at 11:56 a.m.

Firefighters had to cut open the driver's side doors of the Civic to free the trapped driver and one of the backseat passengers.

The four people in the Civic and the Odyssey's three occupants were taken to various hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police closed the eastbound lanes of Steeles at Pharmacy for more than an hour as they investigated.

Less than an hour earlier, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the eastbound collector lanes of Hwy. 401 east of Progress Avenue. The pedestrian, a woman, was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with life-threatening injuries.

The two left lanes of the highway were closed for about three hours for the police investigation.

Sgt. Mark Yeandle of 42 Division said police see an increase in accidents on long weekends.

"The Toronto Police Service would like every driver to exercise a little bit more care and attention when driving so that everyone arrives safely," he said.
