Police from 43 Division have issued a public safety alert following a number of distraction thefts in local stores.

Police said a man and a woman would spill ketchup on a woman's coat and then offer to help her by removing and cleaning the coat.

While the victim is distracted, one suspect takes cash and other valuables from the victim's purse.

"In these incidents, the victim has gone to a retail store shortly after withdrawing cash from an ATM," police said in a news release.

The male suspect is white, possibly European, 44 to 50 years old with a medium build.

The female suspect is white, possibly European, 40 to 50, five-feet three-inches to five-feet four-inches tall, 120 to 150 pounds with shoulder-length black hair and a medium build.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Tony Forchione or Det. Dan Dion at 416-808-4300 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
