Re: 'New recycling fines are not good politics,' Editorial, Oct. 24
I am writing to say I am very disappointed with the city. They want to propose fines and have 'garbage police' check homeowner bins, which they will be doing to homeowners because it is easier than checking with condos and apartment buildings.
I think they should check their own sites with Toronto Community Housing Corporation before they start with checking and fining homeowners on what bins are not being used. On a recently aired news magazine show, you can see garbage piled up and I did not see any blue bins or green bins. I have also contacted people I know that reside in condos and apartments and they say they very seldom use recycling because of where it is located.
I have been an advocate of reduce, reuse and recycle for over 20 years. I have a large blue bin and I have requested an extra large one to be delivered to my house. I do not use my green bin because I have a composter in my back yard.
So now, I ask you, will I be fined because the 'garbage police' do not see my green bin? If so, I will have to take time off of work to fight the fine and waste the court's time with this nonsense. Also, what is to stop people from putting their waste in my bins which are on the street waiting for pick up?
My opinion is that this is another way the city is trying to make us bleed more money into their coffers, since it will be the homeowners that will be fined. When will this stop? I consider this prejudicial against homeowners.
We have to let city hall know we have had enough.
