The list of recalled meat is expanding to include products sold in Sobey’s, Costco, Foodland and IGA in light of the deadly listeria outbreak linked to a North York processing plant.
Cooked ham and salami sandwiches sold in Sobey’s, Foodland and IGA with an Aug. 24 best-before date have been recalled by Maple Leaf Foods. Kirkland brand croissant and meat and cheese platters sold at Costco with a best-before date up to Aug. 29 are also on the list.
The cooked ham and salami sandwiches affected by the recall are 4Pk Cooked Ham and Salami Subs Whole Wheat / 257254 307991 900 g; 4Pk Cooked Ham and Salami Subs White / 227257 307991 900 g; 2Pk Cooked Ham and Salami Subs Whole Wheat / 237214 404397 450 g; 2Pk Cooked Ham and Salami Subs White / 217229 404391 450 g; Cooked Ham and Salami Sub Whole Wheat / 257253 002580 225 g and Cooked Ham and Salami Sub White / 217237 002596 225 g.
The local plant, located on Bartor Road, remains closed.
Maple Leaf Foods president Michael McCain said he takes full responsibility for the outbreak discovered two weeks ago, which has been directly linked to five deaths. Twenty-nine cases of listeriosis have been confirmed across Canada and another 30 are considered “suspect.”
Meanwhile, at least three law firms have launched class-action lawsuits against Maple Leaf Foods.
Nearly 1,500 people have joined the Merchant Law Group class action suit, which was called “unprecedented” by the lawyer heading the suit.
The firms are encouraging anyone who may have eaten the recalled meat to seek medical attention and have blood work done to test for listeriosis.
