Goliaths sweep boys soccer titles

East York seniors hope for medal at quad-A OFSAA

East York Collegiate swept the Toronto District School Board boys soccer titles on Thursday, May 29.

The senior Goliaths won 5-1 over Scarborough's Agincourt Collegiate at the top quad-A level, and the junior Goliaths won 4-3 on penalty kicks over Northview Heights.

While the junior Goliaths can hang up their cleats with an undefeated championship season in the books, the seniors, also undefeated, get to move on to the Ontario Federation of Athletic Associations (OFSAA) quad-A provincial championsips which take place in Windsor, June 9 to 11.

"I think they'll rank us probably in the top three or four," said East York Goliaths phsy ed head Mike Perovic.

"It's a representative tournament. You never know who's going to show up and who's any good. But you've got to play those four or five games in two days, and we've got 18 players so I think we're deep enough."

Added head coach Tom Drivas: "Nobody wants to get ahead of themselves but I think we have the horses that can come away with a medal. It all depends if they're focused. That's what it comes down to."

Scoring for the seniors were Paul Tsagaris and Milos Paprica with two goals each and a single marker to Stefan Korica.

The juniors won the hard way.

Behind 2-0 in the first minute, they rallied to tie the game 3-3 at the end of regulation and then won it on overtime penalty kicks.

Both teams had to contend with long layoffs.

That's because the south division which they play in, much to the chagrin of the Goliath players and coaches, play their schedule in the fall. The team therefore has to wait for late spring to resume their schedule in the city playdowns.

The senior team kept sharp by winning their Scarborough high school league indoor title over the winter. But still their semifinal game, which they won 2-1 over the always tough Birchmount Park Collegiate team earlier in the week, was their first outdoor game as a team since the fall.

GOLIATH GOLF TOURNEY

Friends of East York Goliaths, a community fundraising organization which basically rescued the school's football team from a seven-year haitus, to the point where it is now a perennial contender, is hosting its fifth annual golf tournament on Monday, June 23 at Sumitt Golf and Country Club.

Funds also help support the football team's annual Friday Night Lights game which has attracted large crowds.
